Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?
If your child isn’t experiencing any pain or discomfort, you may be wondering why these visits are so important. During these appointments, your child’s hygienist will remove plaque and tartar that can accumulate, resulting in cavities and gum disease. Their pediatric dentist checks for existing dental issues so they can be treated early in their tracks. When minor issues are left untreated, they will worsen. Your child could end up requiring much more extensive services by waiting. By closely following their oral health through these routine visits, we can lower their risk of more extensive dental issues as they get older.
What to Expect During a Dental Checkup
Your child’s appointment will begin with a visual examination of their teeth, gums, existing dental work, and overall bite. Once a year, X-rays are taken of the mouth to ensure that there aren’t any issues under the surface that are left unseen. While very rare for children, we will also check for any signs of oral cancer. If we come across any issues, we will put together a treatment plan. These dental checkups are also a great time to ask questions about at-home care.
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning
As children are learning and developing proper brushing and flossing techniques, there will be some areas that they miss. This is where their professional cleanings can help. During this time, their hygienist will use dental instruments to remove plaque and tartar from between the teeth and along the gumline. This will reduce their risk of tooth decay and gum disease. The hygienist will floss your child’s teeth and polish them to reduce any surface discoloration.
