Teen Dental Health: 4 Challenges They May Face

Take a moment to think about the problems you had while you were younger. They might be vastly different now that you’re an adult, let alone a parent! You are now trying your best to take care of yourself and your teen. A great way that you can help your loved one is by learning more about the unique challenges they may face, even those relating to their smile. Here are four concerns they may have about their grin.

1.)  Their Wisdom Teeth Can Cause Trouble

Wisdom teeth are the last set to come in, and they do so much later than the rest. They start to erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. They can come in at an angle or not push through the gumline at all, causing discomfort. These scenarios can lead to oral health issues, but you can avoid any trouble by having their pediatric dentist take a look to see if removing them will be best.

2.)  Dental-Related Injuries from Sports

If your teen plays sports or an activity where they might receive a facial blow, then it’s important they take proper safety precautions. They might wear padding to protect their body from injury, but make sure they don’t forget a mouthguard! This is a customized oral appliance that sits over their smile and absorbs impacts. That way, they can avoid a chip or crack.

3.)  Outside Pressures and Habits

In the age of the internet and social media, your teen might be exposed to perfect-looking grins online. They may start to feel self-conscious about their own teeth and try out harmful DIY hacks. Remind them not everything they see is what it seems, but there are ways their dentist can boost the aesthetics of their smile.

Not only that, but your loved one might also be stressed about different things, from school to their social life. They might grind or clench their teeth, which can lead to jaw pain. If they also drink energy drinks, then these might also cause cavities or enamel erosion.

4.)  E-Cigarettes, Tobacco, and Vapes

Many adults have used their teenage years to experiment with things like smoking. Your loved one might do the same. Vaping, tobacco, and e-cigarettes can all have impacts on smiles. These habits can increase their risk of stains, gum disease, and even oral cancer.

Hearing your loved one does these or is interested might be more than frustrating. However, you should stay calm and have a serious discussion with them. Let them know the complications they lead to, so they can make better choices in the future.

In the end, your teen has several challenges they might go through, some of which are dental-related. By learning them, you can do your best to help them through it all and show off a problem-free smile they love.
